A carbon steel griddle is perfect for cooking for many people. You can make everything from the most delicious brunch to perfect smash burgers. Additionally, the griddle is super versatile, as it can be used on induction, gas, grill, and over direct fire.
But how should a griddle be cleaned after use? We will tell you in this guide.
How to Clean a Griddle After Use
If you have other carbon steel cookware, such as an iron skillet, you are likely already familiar with the methods. Cleaning a griddle is identical to the methods used on iron skillets - and luckily, it's quite easy. Just read along here:
Method 1: Wipe with Paper Towel
If you have cooked something on your griddle that hasn't stuck, it's simple to clean the plate. All you need to do is remove excess fats and food residues with a paper towel. Then the plate is ready for storage.
Method 2: The Salt Method
If you've fried burgers or other meats, it can happen that something sticks to the griddle. Fortunately, this is also easy to remove without removing your seasoning, which makes the plate nonstick - and therefore should remain intact.
All you need to do is apply coarse salt to the griddle and a little oil. Then spread the mixture around the plate until the stubborn food residues are gone.
Method 3: The Simmer Method
If method 2 hasn't been enough to remove the food residues, you can try the following approach: Start by covering the surface of the griddle with a little water and let it simmer while gently scraping the surface with a wooden spatula to remove the last residues. However, it is important to ensure that the pan is completely dry afterward and apply a thin layer of oil to prevent rust formation. Once these steps are done, your griddle is ready for storage.
How to Deep Clean a Griddle
If you lent your griddle to a friend who hasn't been quite punctual with our care guides, it can happen that burnt-on food residues or rust set in the griddle. Especially if the griddle has gotten water/moisture, you risk rust formation.
But fear not!
With this two-step method, you can make your griddle look like new:
Note: With both of these methods, it is necessary to give your griddle a new seasoning afterward, as these remove the existing seasoning.
Step 1: Scrub the Griddle
If there are food residues on the griddle, you can scrub the surface with a brush, coarse sponge, or a lump of steel wool.
Step 2: Use Vinegar
If there are still food residues or rust in the griddle, we have one last trick:
1. Mix equal parts water and distilled vinegar in the griddle and set it over medium heat on the stove or grill.
2. Pour out the mixture.
3. Scrub the pan thoroughly with hot water and soap to remove any food or rust residues.
4. After cleaning, it is important to give your griddle a new layer of seasoning by burning it in with a thin layer of oil. This helps rebuild the protective coating and nonstick effect.
