Pizza sandwich with mozzarella, arugula, ham and pesto

Dive into the ultimate sandwich in the form of a freshly baked pizza sandwich, which has recently gone viral on TikTok and other social media.

The pizza sandwich tastes excellent with everything from mortadella, baked chorizo, and Italian salami. This version is another favourite featuring air-dried ham in a flavourful combination with fresh mozzarella, tomato, arugula, and green pesto.

Ingredients

For 4 people
Yeast
Lukewarm water
Salt
Olive oil + extra for brushing
Italian wheat flour tipo 00
Green pesto
Tomatoes
Fresh mozzarella
Slices of air-dried ham
Handfuls of arugula

Instructions

Dissolve the yeast in water, and add salt and olive oil. Gradually add the flour, kneading the dough thoroughly in a mixer for about 10 minutes until it pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Let the dough rise covered for 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 230 degrees and place a baking steel inside.

Divide the dough into 4 balls and let them rise covered for 30 minutes.

Press and stretch the dough into thin circles, and brush generously with olive oil. Fold one half over the other and brush the top with olive oil.

Bake for about 15 minutes until the pizza dough is golden and cooked through.

Carefully open the pizza sandwich and spread with pesto.

Slice the tomatoes and mozzarella and arrange them in the pizza sandwich along with the air-dried ham and arugula.

Serve immediately.
